Members of the Class of 2008 Earn Academic Honors at Virginia Tech!
The 2008 graduating class from GCA was well recognized for their academics at Virginia Tech this past weekend. Congratuations to the following students for these achievements: Sean Grindlay-Magna Cum Laude in Economics; Cassy Sims-Summa Cum Laude in Biological Sciences; Amber Brooks- Summa Cum Laude in Biological Sciences; Susan Buyrn- Summa Cum Laude in Psychology. These students were also recognized as Honor students.
Imani Collins participates in the 2012 Virginia Pilot Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Imani Collins who participated in the 2012 Virginia
Pilot Spelling Bee on February 11, 2012. Imani made it to the sixth round of competition and made us very proud! Way to go Imani!
Handwriting Competition
Congratulations to the following students that were selected to represent their grade level in Zaner Bloser's 2011-2012 National Handwriting Competition.

Gators on the Stage
Greenbrier students Lauren Hudspeth (2nd), Kalyn Wright (3rd), Kyle Wright (5th), and Bryce Wright (7th) took to the stage with Lyric Virginia Opera in their production of Rodgers and Hammerstien's The King and I. The musical is based on the 1944 novel, Anna and the King of Siam. Youth from all over Hampton Roads were invited to audition based on recommendations from their school or private music teachers. Approximately 70 youth from our area participated in the sold out performance which took place at the Sandler Center in early January.
Serving Others
Eighth grader Kyle Matthews enjoys being a part of helping others at Point Harbor Community Church. Once a month, the church provides food to local community members. Bagging, distributing and carrying the food for those in need are practical ways that Kyle shows the love of Christ to others.
First Annual Spelling Bee
On December 14, 2011 GCA hosted its first annual Spelling Bee. Twenty-four students qualified for the school-wide bee by placing in the top spots in their classroom bees. Congratulations to Imani Collins for winning the Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word Florentine. Imani will advance to the local Spelling Bee to be held in Norfolk on February 11, 2012.
Checkered Flag Athlete of the Month: Nick Jessee
Congratulations to Nick Jessee, GCA Senior, for being selected to be the Checkered Flag Athlete of the Month for February.
Checkered Flag supports local High School athletes who excel on and off the playing field.
Congratulations Senior James Bedi!
James Bedi, a senior at GCA, has been named as a 2011-2012 Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program of the College Board. The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to recognize outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Approximately 5000 students are being recognized this year out of the 235,000 that took the PSAT and identified themselves as Hispanic for their performance on this test. Furthermore, to be named a program Scholar, the student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. James plans to pursue his further education with the College of William and Mary beginning in the fall of 2012. Congratulations James!
Congratulations Senior Sophia Blunt!
Sophia Blunt, a senior at GCA, has been recognized by the College Board as an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program associated with the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This recognition program was initiated in 1964 by the College Board to honor academically promising Black American high school students. Congratulations Sophia for this honor!
